Doge (often DOHJ , DOHG , DOHZH [1]) is an Internet meme that became popular in 2013. The meme typically consists of a picture of Kabosu, a Shiba Inu canis familiaris accompanied by multicolored text in Comic Sans font in the foreground. The text, representing a kind of internal monologue, is deliberately written in a form of broken English language.

The meme is based on a 2010 photograph, and became pop in late 2013, existence named as Know Your Meme 's "elevation meme" of that year. The Shiba Inu had a notable presence in popular civilisation in late 2013, including a cryptocurrency based on Doge, the Dogecoin, launching in December of that year. Several online polls and media outlets recognized Doge as one of the best Internet memes of the 2010s.

Structure

Doge uses two-word phrases in which the start discussion is about always one of 5 modifiers ("and then", "such", "many", "much", and "very"), and the difference from correct English is to use the modifier with a discussion that it cannot properly modify.[2] For example, "Much respect. And then noble." uses the Doge modifiers merely is non "proper" Doge because the modifiers are used in a formally right fashion; the Doge version would be "Much noble, and so respect."[2] In addition to these phrases, a Doge utterance ofttimes ends with a single word, virtually often "wow" only with "astonish" and "excite" likewise beingness used.[ii]

These memes are mostly present on subreddits like r/dogelore.[6] One meme which became popular in 2020 was "Swole Doge vs. Cheems", in which a muscular Doge and a babe Cheems are depicted as something considered ameliorate in the past, and its modern version, respectively.[7] [8]

Kabosu (Japanese: かぼす, born 2 November 2005[nine]), the female person Shiba Inu featured in the original meme, is a pedigree dog who was sent to an animal shelter when her puppy mill shut downwardly. She was adopted in 2008 by Japanese kindergarten instructor Atsuko Satō, and named after the citrus fruit kabosu because Sato thought she had a round confront like the fruit.[10] Some other Shiba Inu featured in the meme is Suki, a female person belonging to photographer Jonathan Fleming from San Francisco. His wife had accidentally put a scarf in the wash, making it compress. He took a photograph of Suki wearing the scarf outside on a cold night in February 2010.[10]

Kabosu was first pictured in a 2010 blog post by Sato; subsequently, variations of the pictures using overlaid Comic Sans text were posted from a Tumblr blog, Shiba Confessions.[10] However, the employ of the intentionally misspelled "Doge" dates dorsum to June 2005, when information technology was mentioned in an episode of Homestar Runner 'south puppet series.[1] The meme began to abound in popularity after it was used on Reddit in October 2010 in a mail service titled "LMBO LOOK @ THIS FUKKEN DOGE."[3] [10]

Some of the other characters used in the meme are based on photographs of existent dogs. Cheems is based on an image of a domestic dog named Balltze, from Hong Kong; he was adopted at the age of one and was nine years sometime in 2020.[5] Walter is based on the bull terrier Nelson, who originally became pop in 2018 later his owner, Victoria Leigh, posted a picture of Nelson to Twitter, with the caption "When u open the front-facing camera on accident." In 2020, rumors of Nelson'southward death began to broadcast the net, although they turned out to be false.[6] [11]

The almost common pronunciations of "Doge" are DOHJ and DOHG . In non-English speaking countries, "Doge" is occasionally pronounced "contrivance". Those unfamiliar or unacquainted with the meme also use the pronunciations "doggie", Dog-ay, DOH-gay, or simply like the word "dog" itself, i.e. Dog or DAWG .[one]

Initial 2013 spread

Online searches for the meme began to increment in July 2013.[10] In August 2013, images of the meme were spammed on Reddit's r/MURICA subreddit by 4chan's random imageboard, /b/.[12] The meme was ranked at No. 12 on MTV's list of "l Things Popular Culture Had Us Giving Thanks For" in 2013.[thirteen] io9 compared the internal dialog of the Shiba Inu dogs to lolspeak.[xiv] On December xiii, Doge was named the "top meme" of 2013 by Know Your Meme.[15]

In late Dec 2013, members of the U.Southward. Congress produced material in the meme's style. The Huffington Post commented that Doge was "killed" considering of the Congress members' usage of the meme.[sixteen] [17]

In advertizing

In mid–2014, the advertisement agency DDB Stockholm had Doge featured prominently in an advertising campaign for the public ship company SL in Stockholm, Sweden. Reception and legacy
